I wasn’t expecting any notable announcements at Web Analytics Day, an annual industry conference organized by Brussels-based web analytics agency OX2, but when Ian Thomas (Director at Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions) took the stage for a 15-minute slot as sponsor of the event, he surprised everyone with an extensive introduction to Microsoft’s upcoming free web analytics tool (codenamed Gatineau), along with some screenshots.
This was the first public presentation of Gatineau, which aims to take on Google Analytics and basic web analytics software vendors. You can solicit an invitation for the limited beta here. The first invitations for the beta are expected to be sent out next week.
Gatineau will be initially rolled out in English only, and only in countries who have a local adCenter support team. Considering Microsoft’s massive disposal of socio-demographic and behavioural data from its MSN and Live platform users, you can expect that Gatineau will eventually become a threat to Google Analytics and vendors offering basic on-demand web analytics. Evidently, offering the tool for free fits into Microsoft’s strategy of adding value to its digital advertising solutions for the Live platform and the MSN Networks. There are some privacy concerns which Ian claims have been thoroughly addressed by Microsoft. He elaborated on this topic during a talk I had with him after the presentation, of which I’ll post the transcript later. (Update: you can find the transcript here)
Ian Thomas remained cautious of setting the expectations too high for the beta release, which will not include every feature visible on the screenshots below. He also claims his team has learned a lot from looking at the mistakes made by other companies in this field. More info in the interview I’ll put up later. (Update: you can find the transcript here)
(Update: the guys from OX2 put up the video of Ian’s presentation - poor low and video quality)
Here’s how Ian described the aims of Gatineau:
- Out-of-the-box demographic segmentation
- Integrated view of marketing campaign effectiveness
- Integration of conversion value data
- Innovative visualisation of behavioural data
Now, let me share with you the presentation slides Ian has graciously allowed me to post here on blognation, along with some screenshots. I also wanted to explicitly thank industry guru Eric T. Peterson from Web Analytics Demystified for sending over the slides (see his blog for further context).
(Update: the following visualisations and features will not be included in the first beta release)
That last URL is not clickable
You’ll have to do that here.
Hat tip to Eric Peterson.

“Considering Microsoft’s massive disposal of socio-demographic and behavioural data from its MSN and Live platform users, you can expect that Gatineau will eventually become a threat to Google Analytics and vendors offering basic on-demand web analytics.”
Well, with such a tiny market share compared to Google then it might happen - one day - but quite frankly they’re nowhere near getting the traction they’d expected.
Evidently, offering the tool for free fits into Microsoft’s strategy of adding value to its digital advertising solutions for the Live platform and the MSN Networks.”
Are you naive? They’ve got to follow Google which means emulating them.
I’m astonished folk make such a big deal about this kind of thing. Sure the digital ads market is huge, but it is a fraction of the value of the enterprise market.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:08 am
Ever used Google Analytics Dennis? I’m guessing not making you naive.
It’ll be a year before Google can emulate Microsoft just regarding their own Google search engine data. Gatineau provides more information about your Google search hits than Google even has access too.
Biggest story in the next 8-10 months? The Great Google Gaggle as they break laws and violate privacy to try and catch up. Guarantee it!

Dennis,
Of course they are emulating Google, in the sense that Google was first to offer such exhaustive stats free of charge. But it would be equally naive to think that Microsoft doesn’t have any competitive advantage if you look at the amount of data they have been collecting for years.
Also, If you look at the screenshots you will notice Gatineau features some stuff Google Analytics simply doesn’t offer at this point.

Having actually used the application for a few hours in an MS lab I have to say some of the features mentioned above are going to be incredibly useful. Drill downs offering demographics are going to open up a whole new vista to the way we market online. Of course just how they [MS] are constructing this data is the real issue - we’ll have to wait and see how valid it is.
Campaign tracking was something I didn’t personally like initially because it was such a new way to visualise campaigns and channels, but after walking away and thinking about it I’m most excited about this feature. I see from an update on one of the blogs referenced in the post tht campaign visualisations wont be released until a later phase. Shame we’ll have to wait.

Will Microsoft’s web-analytics-tool be user-friendly to average joe’s, while at the same time provide advance tools for pro users, be very accurate and precise on it’s data, and have a UI that’s easy to navigate through?
After all, that is the main components of a good product. If Microsoft can do that with Gatineau, then Google Analytics will really have something hard to go against.
I’m hoping that Gatineau will be a great tool over Google’s offering.

Part of my frustration with all Web Analytics packages is that they provide a ’snapshot’ rather than a ‘workflow’. Data is only helpful when its actionable. Trying to push data from a Web Analytics package and back into visitor profiles for additional segmentation is what every advanced marketer is after.
If Microsoft develops a great solution for this feedback loop, they’ll win the market. I’m looking forward to seeing Gastineau!

Aku kurang berminat dengan tawaran nie, dan mungkin akan setia dengan Google Analytics disamping dengan sistem statistik yang disediakan oleh cPanel dan SlimStat yang aku gunakan.
